    Father Byron Maher

As you all know by now, since I sent out a blast email yesterday, Father Maher passed away Sunday May 23rd at the age of 85. Thanks to Jim Weimar for the initial information. After Jim let me know, I Googled the Chicago Tribune to find the obituary so I could send it out. Pat Urbut had the same idea and sent the obit to our “core group committee” which I then forwarded to the whole class.

While I was on the obituary page, I took the liberty to sign the Guest Book for myself and on behalf of our class. Any of you who feel you would like to sign as well should use the link in the email and then go ahead and sign the guestbook. I have received two comments this morning which I will post here for everyone to read. As/if I get more, they will also go up here.

FROM MIKE GLYNN:  I remember many things about Father Maher but mostly those memories center around my non-paying(at least non-paying in the form of filthy lucre) job of alterboy. He was one of the world’s fastest to complete a mass and woe to the kid who had to ring the bell on the rectory door to wake him up for the 6:00 am Sunday mass.

FROM CAROL SCHMIDT SCHOLTENS:   I remember him coming to class on Monday morning to quiz us on the Gospel and Epistle readings from the day before.  Fathers Guerin and Leyhane shared the rectory with him.  I know he’ll be missed.  Thanks for sending the condolences on our behalf.

    More praise for our website

I received the following email from Ed Fee:

“Nice web site, lot’s of memories even if I was a four years behind your class.

So many of the names are familiar because of the siblings that our classes shared. Also, we younger guys really looked up to you older guys. I can remember playing Run-Chief on the blacktop one winter. I was in 4th grade and was nailed by Don Cranley. It was like being hit by a train.

In any case, nice seeing all of you on the Internet. I wish my class would do something like this. Maybe we can get it going.”

    Open Invitation

The Chicago area group is having a get-together on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. See the front page of the website for details.

      FROM PATTI DUFFY POIRIER:
You are the best. I would have loved to attend that but I always have my family Thanksgiving on the Saturday of that weekend. My son Brian and his wife are in Health Care and always have to work Friday and live in Galena. They will drive in on Saturday and leave Sunday. I let the other kids who are married go to the other side for Thanksgiving Day and we celebrate Saturday with left over turkey dishes and play games and stuff. There are 6 grandchildren going to be here and one of them is 10 months old, Kaitlin. I’m looking forward to getting out the Chipolte Turkey Chili receipe again, for one thing, and trying a new pumpkin parfait pie for another. I tried a few new receipes last week, and Carlos is said to have love the parfair pie so much, that he packed it for lunch last Monday in a cooler. Carlos has been a head chef for Holiday Inn, so I am very pleased with his applause.

Hope you have a fun time; know you will.

I think a gathering post New Years would be fun too.

      Love,

      Patti Duffy Poirier

      FROM MARIANNE SWIERCZEK HAWKINS:
      Hi Sue!

I won’t be there….. staying home for T-day, and having the family over. But say hi to all, and I am still planning a trip to LV in the coming year!

      Love,
      Marianne

    Nice Comments from Visitors

We’ve had a couple of visitors stop by our site via the link on the St. Ethelreda school site. They have sent some nice comments. I thought it might be worth it to create a new page for all of these comments so they are accessible permanently all in one place. The new page is called Other Alumni Comments and can be found in the list of pages to the right.

    The Sunday News

It’s still hot here in Henderson – mid-80′s at not quite 9AM. I am looking forward to the cool-down that most of you are already experiencing. I like change of seasons, and have never really gotten used to our only two – hot and hotter. On the other hand, in December and January when I run around with only a blazer or light jacket during the day I guess that makes up for it.

Just got an email Saturday with Cathy Riordan Full’s pictures from the Reunion. I will be adding those to the slideshow this week. Cathy just got back from her son’s wedding, and we are looking forward to hearing all about it when she catches her breath.

Let me know what is going on with all of you – we need to stay connected now.

    Getting to Work

Well it has been a week since the August Newsletter went out, and so far 41 of you have opened and read it and jumped over to the website to see the pictures.

I have started work on the Commemerative Booklet, and it is going to be a work that will truly be a showcase of the lives of our class. It will either be about 76 pages or as big as 80 pages if the few others I am still hounding get any update material in to me. In a few days I will upload some of the finished pages so everyone can get an idea of what a great tribute to our class this will be.

    Some of the Comments Received

I will publish here some of the comments that we have received by email from classmates:

From Susan Brown Bennett: “Thanks for all your hard work organizing the reunion. I had a great time. I like the idea of having the official get-together every 5 years. There might even be a bigger turn out at future events especially as the economy improves. I was surprised to find out that so many of our classmates had relocated. “

From Pat Urbut: “Hi! I received an e mail from Lourdes Morris Garrick expressing interest in a reunion next year. She hopes that some more come who did not show this time.”

From Jim Weimar: “I am all for it and would be happy to help out again. I really enjoyed it. Roger Smith asked me to call him re: meeting for lunch, any one interested? Also Don Mullaney and his wife Carol would like to get together, if any one is interested just call or e-mail.”

From Lourdes Morris Garrick: “Thanks for organizing such a fun reunion. I had a wonderful time. It was so good to see you again. And a special thank you for the terrific web site.”

From Joan Challingsworth Goliak: “The accolades are rolling in as they should be! It was such a nice party and everyone really connected. We couldn’t ask for more. Thank you again.”

From Frank Ganser: “”We had a great time at the re-union.You did a fantastic job. Thanks for everything.

I had a fabulous time, and really enjoyed seeing everyone again and talking to you all……. Wish I had more time to talk with everyone. I think a 5 year get together is a grand idea.

    Back At It Again

Seems like an age since I was on here posting so all could keep up with what was happening. I arrived home on Wednesday Aug. 12th and took a couple of days to unpack, do laundry, etc. I had a fantastic visit with Mike and Jeanne Shaughnessy at their home in Edmond, OK on Monday the 10th. They asked about everyone and were sorry that they could not have been at the reunion.

Today I received the “official” class picture that Susan Brown Bennett took at the Reunion along with her 20 or so pictures of the event. That means I can start tomorrow updating the website and getting out the August Newsletter.

I will share some of the email and comments that have been received so far from attendees a little later. For sure I can say that it will NOT be 25 more years before we do this again!

    What an Event!

I am on the road again – now in St. Louis area watching my granddaughters for two weeks. Can’t wait to get home and work on all the great pictures and updates for the website from the reunion.

Everyone had a GREAT time. If you were there, add comments to this post, or email your comments to me and I will post them for all to see – and add them to the August Newsletter when I get back.

    Later gang …
