2019 Girls Beach Weekend – October 4-6

Another successful, unforgettable weekend with the ladies in Michigan City and Grand Beach. We all met up first for lunch on Friday at Fish Camp restaurant right on the waterway entrance to Lake Michigan. Potent (but not immobilizing) Bloody Mary’s, creamy clam chowder, beautifully fall-colored salads, and more to kick off the week-end.  Then it was conversation and relaxation at Liz’s cottage for the afternoon.

We had decided this year to all bring our wedding pictures and any other memorabilia we wanted to share. This came about because in talking one day quite awhile back, Patti and Sue discovered that they were both married on the same day (September 5, 1964). Patti at a 9 AM Mass, and Sue at an 11 AM Mass.  All of us had been married in St. Ethelreda and it was quite a revelation to see how interchangable all of our wedding pictures were. The standard poses, the views of the church. What a kick to pass them all around and remember those younger selves. Patti had a large box full of memorabilia from both grammar school and high school. Just for variety, Sue also brought pictures from her other 3 weddings which provided quite some contrasts – a Unitarian church on the North side, a United Church of Christ in Tillamook, Oregon, and a drive-thru wedding chapel in Las Vegas.

In the early evening we met up with Liz’s sister Jane and Sharon Prusko’s sister Sandy at the Lubeznick Center for the Arts to view the current exhibit, sip fresh apple cider and listen to a guitarist. Jane and Sandy joined us back at Liz’s for cheese, wine and a light dinner followed by a “non” birthday cake for Diane.

Saturday late morning we rendevoused at Joan’s for the caravan to Sawyer’s Farmers’ Market. Always a favorite. Then on to Oaks Eatery restaurant for lunch. Undeterred, there were short side trips down the street checking resale shops. Everybody found art, jewelry, cookware or nostalgia to bring home. Exhausted from the walking and eating, we met back at Joan’s to relax and enjoy some beautiful pictures from Cathy’s trip to Salzberg and Prague and a delightful documentary with Dame Maggie Smith, Dame Judi Dench, Dame Joan Plowright, and Dame Eileen Atkins called “Tea with the Dames”, a witty peek into the lives both past and present of four legends of the British stage through archival footage and captured conversations.

A light dinner and wine followed.

Sunday morning we were all back on the road home.
